I think the political pressure on Caiphus and the other priests to retain power was immense. The only true solution they could see was to kill Jesus. But, they had to do so in a way that the crowds would not riot. Interesting vision of the ancient world. Metal scaffolding and all.

Jesus's actions severely disrupted the hold the institutional powers had in their in control over society. Jesus was reinstating social outcasts back into mainstream society. Technically in terms like that, Jesus was a nobody, and the fact that someone with absolutely no authority or connections could come and start 'curing' lepers so they could be ritually clean again had to have been terrifying to the institution. Similarly, as far as they saw Jesus was blatantly disregarding Sabbath practices. But Jesus's rebuttals were always logical and disparaging to the powers. And having their power debased like that, made Jesus a target. The only option was to silence him.
